This is a 2D voice-control adventure game that draws inspiration from the humpback whale songs. Players are invited to travel through different fantasy worlds with a whale friend, changing volume and pitch to light up scenes, reveal hidden architectures, learn to sing whale songs to find the lost whale and collect notes to compose a melody key to rescue.
这是一款2D声控冒险游戏,灵感源自座头鲸的歌声。玩家将穿越不同的幻想世界,与鲸鱼伙伴同行:通过调节音量与音高来点亮场景、揭示隐藏的关卡,学习吟唱鲸歌以寻找迷途的鲸鱼,并收集音符谱写出解救所需的旋律密钥。

Intention
This game tries to build connection between humans and whales through music, offering an engaging and interactive approach for the player to learn about the melody of humpback whales and rethink inter-species communication.

Design Statement
Game Overview
Whale Songs is a 2D voice-control adventure game that draws inspiration from the humpback whale songs. Personal Contribution
Organized and visualized game flow in design documents
Improved game mechanics and enriched the narrative, which are presented with flowcharts and storyboards
Created concept art and illustrations for game assets and environmental backdrops
Stylized rendered animations of the 3D characters in Blender and created 2D skeleton animations in Unity
Collaborated with a programmer to design and iterate on new levels
What I have learned from this project
Through iterative level design from sketch to white box testing, I gained a deeper understanding of integrating level design with the game’s narrative and mechanics. After several play tests, I also learned to adjust the difficulty curve based on feedback, creating a gaming experience that strikes a balance between challenge and simpleness.
In group work, visualizing ideas (instead of writing them down) in game design documents improved the efficiency of our collaboration. For example, the storyboards and flowcharts of level design played a big role in the discussion between artists and programmer, ensuring everyone in the team understands the latest mechanics.
During the development, I attempted to use environmental storytelling to reduce reliance on text and UI components, encouraging players to discover mechanics without many hints. However, some players reported feeling of confusion during gameplay. I am still learning how to balance UI prompts and the joy of self-exploration.

项目收获
通过从草图到白盒测试的迭代式关卡设计,我深入理解了如何将关卡结构与叙事机制有机融合。经过多轮试玩测试后,我掌握了根据玩家反馈调整难度曲线的方法,在挑战性与易上手之间找到平衡。
在团队协作中,通过可视化设计文档(如关卡故事板与流程图)取代纯文字说明,显著提升了美术与程序间的沟通效率。例如,视觉化的机制示意图确保全队能快速理解最新设计逻辑。
开发过程中,我尝试通过环境叙事减少对文字和UI的依赖,引导玩家自主探索机制。但部分玩家反馈存在初期迷茫感,这让我意识到仍需在UI提示与探索乐趣间寻求更优解。
